Assam's Nagaon Bypoll: Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora seeks blessings at Batadrava Than

Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora, who is contesting the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, visited Batadrava Than, the sacred birthplace of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, on September 17 after filing her nomination papers and sought blessings at the historic shrine.

Speaking after offering prayers, Bora said she was confident of receiving the support of the people in the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, asserting that people are the ultimate authority in a democracy. She expressed confidence that voters would elect her in the upcoming election.

Bora also said the Congress would not engage in politics over Batadrava Than and highlighted issues she had raised during her earlier tenure as a legislator.

She claimed that she was among the first to demand in the Assam Legislative Assembly that floods be declared a national issue, adding that her statements on the matter were part of the official record.

The Congress candidate also highlighted her stand on women’s empowerment, saying she had raised issues concerning women during her time as an MLA.

Bora further alleged that minority communities were being subjected to fear and pressure by the BJP, and claimed that this had led some members of the community to join the party.

She also alleged that the BJP, despite its earlier treatment of minorities, now requires the support of minority voters in the Nagaon by-election.

The Nagaon Lok Sabha seat fell vacant following Pradyut Bordoloi’s election to the Assam Legislative Assembly, necessitating the bypoll. The election campaign has intensified, with candidates and political parties stepping up outreach across the constituency.
