With the flood season approaching, authorities at Assam’s Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary have initiated extensive preparations to safeguard wildlife, staff, and infrastructure.
Speaking to ANI, Sanctuary Ranger Pranjal Baruah said, “We are preparing for the flood situation, including development of infrastructure, repair of boats, and stockpiling of relief materials.”
Among the key steps being taken is the relocation of vulnerable elephant camps to higher ground to ensure the safety of captive elephants. “We will shift our elephant camps to the hillside so the elephants remain safe", Baruah said, adding that food materials will be provided on time.
People residing in low-lying, flood-prone areas near the sanctuary will also be relocated to safer zones. Temporary camps will be set up at strategic locations to manage logistics, shelter, and emergency response.
Health camps are being planned for forest staff to ensure medical support is available before floods hit. “We will organise a health camp for the field staff… so that before the flood, they can get medical support,” Baruah noted.
Authorities are appealing to the government for essential supplies like ration and logistical support to strengthen flood readiness. “We are requesting the government to provide ration and other essential materials for the camps,” he said.
An emergency response team has been formed to carry out rescue operations, with post-disaster assessments planned to evaluate damages. Identified infrastructure is currently being repaired, and travel routes are being mapped to ensure efficient movement during emergency evacuations.
