The Tinsukia Municipal Board has announced an intensified drive against illegal encroachments and unauthorized constructions on public roads, warning that structures built within road boundaries may be demolished without prior notice.
Executive Officer Dr. Nayan Jyoti Nath said the anti-encroachment campaign, which has been underway for the past six days, will resume on Monday and continue without any relaxation. He stated that under the Assam Public Works (Regulation of Road Development and Road Transport) Act, 2010, any illegal construction encroaching on government road land can be removed, even without prior notice.
The municipality will also take action against shops, street vendors and hawkers occupying roads and footpaths illegally.
Citing the Supreme Court's June 19, 2026 judgment, Dr. Nath said the apex court had recognised the right to walk safely on properly demarcated footpaths as a Fundamental Right under Articles 19(1)(d) and 21 of the Constitution. He noted that the judgment places a constitutional responsibility on municipal authorities to keep footpaths free from encroachments and ensure pedestrian safety.
The municipality plans to launch a special demolition drive against illegal portions of buildings and commercial establishments along GNB Road, D.M. Lohia Road, A.T. Road, Rangagora Road, Lal Bangla, and other major roads in the town. All encroached footpaths will also be cleared.
Dr. Nath said the objective of the campaign is to make Tinsukia's roads encroachment-free, improve traffic flow and ensure the safety and convenience of pedestrians and commuters.
The Municipal Board has appealed to residents and business owners to voluntarily remove illegal constructions and encroachments from government land, warning that strict legal action will be taken against those who fail to comply.
Meanwhile, several shopkeepers have already dismantled unauthorized sheds in front of their establishments, while attention is now focused on the municipality's next phase of action against the remaining encroachments.
