Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday, January 25 launched a fresh salvo on former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel, alleging that he is facing multiple serious cases even as he continues to tour Assam for political engagements.
Addressing the media, Sarma said Baghel is embroiled in several controversies, including the alleged liquor scam in Chhattisgarh, the Mahadev Betting App case, and an obscene CD matter, calling the developments a major setback for a leader of his stature.
The Assam Chief Minister recalled that during the Chhattisgarh Assembly elections, he had publicly raised concerns over alleged financial transactions routed through the Mahadev Betting App. According to Sarma, the app was allegedly used to transfer thousands of crores of rupees abroad, including to Dubai.
“In this case, several members of Bhupesh Baghel’s family have already been arrested, and investigations against him are underway,” Sarma claimed, referring to the ongoing probes linked to the betting app controversy.
Sarma also referred to the liquor scam allegations that surfaced during Baghel’s tenure as Chief Minister, stating that these cases have continued to cast a shadow over the former Chhattisgarh government.
Additionally, the Assam Chief Minister highlighted developments in the alleged obscene CD case involving Baghel. He said that while Baghel had received interim relief from a magistrate court during his term as Chief Minister, a CBI special court recently ruled that proceedings in the case would continue.
“Yesterday’s order by the CBI special court makes it clear that the case will proceed. This is undoubtedly a blow and a setback for a senior politician like Bhupesh Baghel,” Sarma said.
