Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday described the ongoing probe against Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Nupur Bora as the “biggest raid in the history of the CM’s Vigilance Cell,” vowing that stringent legal action will be taken against her.
Borah, who was serving as Circle Officer in Goraimari in Kamrup district at the time of her arrest, was found to have accumulated assets nearly 400 times more than her official income.
Searches carried out at her residences in Guwahati and Barpeta led to the seizure of over ₹92.50 lakh in cash and ornaments valued at nearly ₹1.5 crore.
“She had amassed wealth 400 times more than her known sources of income. We think that not just suspension or dismissal from the job would suffice. We have to ensure penal measures through the legal process,” Sarma said while addressing a programme in Baksa district. He added that the case underlines his government’s “zero-tolerance” stance on corruption.

The Chief Minister further revealed that Borah had been under surveillance for the past six months, particularly after she authorised an illegal land transfer deal while posted in Barpeta. Following the controversy, she was shifted out of the district, but continued to remain under the scanner of the vigilance cell.
Rosie Kalita, Senior Superintendent of Police, CM’s Special Vigilance Cell, confirmed Borah’s arrest based on a preliminary inquiry. “We had searched her flat in Guwahati and a rented accommodation in Barpeta, recovering over ₹92.50 lakh in cash. It is the largest amount of cash recovered by our cell so far,” Kalita said.
With the recovery of huge sums of unaccounted wealth and ongoing investigations into her financial dealings, the case has sent shockwaves through Assam’s administrative circles. Sarma said the raids mark a historic milestone in the fight against corruption and stressed that such actions will continue until the state achieves transparency and accountability in governance.
