Tensions ran high at Bhatiyapara in Assam’s Sivasagar district after a gas blowout at Rig No. 147, operating under the Rudrasagar oil field of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), triggered panic among residents.
The incident, which began on Thursday, June 12, saw gas continuing to gush uncontrollably for the second consecutive day on Friday, June 13.
In a swift response, Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha visited the affected Barichuk area and lashed out at both ONGC and municipal authorities, alleging gross negligence that endangered public safety.
Speaking to the media, Chaliha accused the authorities of failing to take timely preventive measures.
“The people are in danger due to the incompetence of the municipal corporation and ONGC’s lack of foresight. This is nothing short of criminal negligence,” he said, demanding an immediate investigation and accountability from all responsible parties.
However, Chaliha’s attempt to visit the exact site of the blowout was met with resistance, reportedly from officials or security personnel. Despite being obstructed, he reiterated his call for urgent corrective measures and transparent communication from the administration.

The blowout occurred at Well No. RDS 147 of Rig No. SKP 135, being operated by private contractor SK Petro Services on behalf of ONGC.
According to ONGC, the incident happened during a routine servicing operation when gushes of gas were suddenly detected.
In an official statement, ONGC stated that all standard safety protocols were immediately activated. “The site was promptly secured and an emergency response team, led by the Asset Manager, reached the location without delay... the situation is now fully under control,” it said.
A senior ONGC official told PTI, “There is no fire, no injury. Emergency services have been deployed, and efforts to control the well are ongoing.”
Despite the reassurances, the local community remains anxious. Residents are demanding a thorough inquiry, better disaster preparedness, and strict action against those whose negligence may have contributed to the potentially hazardous situation.
As the gas continues to leak and public anger intensifies, the spotlight now turns to ONGC and district authorities to ensure swift containment, accountability, and preventive measures to avoid future disasters in this sensitive oil-rich region.
