Bir Lachit Sena leaders Rontu Pani Phukan and Bikash Asom granted bail after three months

Bir Lachit Sena chief Rontu Pani Phukan and Bikash Asom were granted bail after spending nearly three months in judicial custody. The two leaders walked out of Tinsukia District Jail amid tight security, where a large number of supporters had gathered since morning to welcome them.

Supporters raised slogans in their favour and offered traditional gamosas as a mark of respect. Firecrackers were burst in celebration as the leaders addressed the gathering briefly before leaving for Sivasagar. Emotional scenes were witnessed as members of Bir Lachit Sena expressed joy at seeing their chief back under the open sky.

A similar reception awaited them in Sivasagar. At Darikapar along National Highway 37, supporters lined up on both sides of the road, waving flags and cheering. The convoy was greeted with loud slogans and festive celebrations, reflecting the strong support base of the organisation.

Speaking to the media, Rontu Pani Phukan termed the period of custody as a “test of patience and commitment.” Referring to the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections, he said the organisation would soon hold formal discussions to decide which regional party it would extend moral support to. He emphasised that any decision would be taken keeping the interests of the indigenous people at the forefront.

On the issue of Bikash Asom’s membership in Bir Lachit Sena, Phukan stated that the matter would be discussed internally and a clear decision would be announced within the next few days.

Responding to criticism on social media platforms, he remarked that “real strength lies on the streets, not on Facebook,” asserting that the organisation’s support is rooted among the people.

The release of the two leaders has sparked fresh political discussions in the region ahead of the upcoming elections.
