Bharatiya Janata Party Mahila Morcha workers of the Dhubri Mandal unit on April 30 organized a “Jan Aakrosh” protest rally at Panch Mor in Dhubri, expressing strong resentment against opposition parties under the I.N.D.I. Alliance over the implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
A large number of women activists led by district and mandal leaders of the BJP gathered during the demonstration, raising slogans in support of the legislation that provides 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. Protesters alleged that parties now aligned under the I.N.D.I. Alliance had delayed or obstructed the passage of the bill for decades.
Carrying placards and banners, the demonstrators accused the opposition of pursuing “anti-women” politics and creating hurdles to women’s political empowerment. Addressing the media, District Mahila Morcha President Konkona Baruah described the Act as a landmark move towards ensuring greater gender equality in Indian democracy.
“The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is a historic step toward strengthening women’s participation in governance. The women of Dhubri are protesting today to express their anger against those political forces that repeatedly stood against women’s representation in Parliament and State Assemblies,” she said.
The BJP Mahila Morcha also announced that it would continue conducting grassroots awareness campaigns to educate women about the significance and benefits of the reservation policy.
