Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev on July 18 visited her hometown Silchar for the first time after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and being elected to the Upper House from West Bengal.
She received a warm welcome from BJP leaders, party workers and supporters upon her arrival at Silchar's Kumbhirgram Airport.
Speaking to reporters at the airport, Dev expressed gratitude to the BJP leadership for reposing faith in her after she left the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
"I had no conditions when I decided to leave the Trinamool Congress. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah trusted me and gave me the opportunity to serve as a Rajya Sabha member. It is a matter of great honour and privilege for me," she said.
Outlining her future priorities, Dev said she would work not only for the people of West Bengal but also for the overall development of Assam, particularly the Barak Valley.
She reiterated her commitment to standing by the people of Barak Valley and thanked the BJP's central leadership for the confidence placed in her.
