Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 9 said that the Bharatiya Janata Party should form the government in West Bengal, asserting that a BJP-led administration across Tripura, Assam and West Bengal would strengthen efforts to tackle illegal infiltration from Bangladesh.
Speaking on the issue, Sarma said that while significant development work has been carried out in Tripura and Assam under BJP governments, the absence of a similar government in West Bengal has hindered coordinated action against illegal infiltration. He claimed that West Bengal has become a weak link in the region’s security and border management framework.
“For once, the BJP should form the government in West Bengal as we have strong supporters there. In Tripura, developmental works are being done, and similarly in Assam too. But because of West Bengal, we are unable to effectively fight against illegal infiltrators from Bangladesh,” Sarma said.
He further asserted that if the BJP were to be in power in all three states—Tripura, Assam and West Bengal—it would place the region in a stronger position to deal with the issue of illegal infiltration in a coordinated and decisive manner.
The Assam Chief Minister’s remarks come amid heightened political focus on border security and migration issues in eastern and northeastern India.
