A special court in Bongaigaon district has delivered an important judgment under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act), sentencing a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl.
The convict, identified as Nanar Janak Choudhury, is a resident of Paharatali near Bongaigaon town.
According to court proceedings, the victim was 15 years old at the time of the incident and later became pregnant following the assault.
The special court found Choudhury guilty under the provisions of the POCSO Act and awarded him 20 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000. In default of payment of the fine, he will have to undergo an additional six months of imprisonment.
The judgment is being viewed as a significant ruling in a sensitive case involving sexual offences against a minor in the district.
