Erosion along the Brahmaputra River continues to threaten villages in Assam’s Sivasagar, with Afala now witnessing severe riverbank collapse following incidents at Majarbari and Ligiribar in Disangmukh.
As water levels recede in some areas, riverbanks are giving way rapidly, submerging large portions of land into river the Brahmaputra and causing widespread concern among locals.
Residents have urged the Water Resources Department to implement immediate preventive measures against further erosion. However, authorities have yet to begin any protective work.
Expressing their frustration, locals warned that without urgent action, the approaching monsoon could leave the area vulnerable, effectively opening the way for contractors to exploit the land.
