Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah on March 7 while remembering the great Ahom general Lachit Borphukan's bravery and ideology reminded the chief minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma that by implementing Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will have dangerous repercussions on the people, language, identity and economy of the state.
Taking a dig at Himanta Biswa Sarma, Bhupen Borah reminded him of Borphukan's famous statement, 'Dekhot ke mumai dangor nohoi' (My uncle is not greater than my country). Borah drew a parallel to this saying, 'Narendra Modi is not greater than the country.'
Despite ideological differences, Borah expressed a desire to meet Prime Minister Modi, representing the indigenous groups of the state. Borah criticised CM Sarma for acting against the values taught by Borphukan, who fought against foreigners.
Borah warned that the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) could pose a threat to the language, identity, and indigenous people of Assam. In the interest of the state's people, the Congress party decided to move postpone the protest date from March 9 to March 8, and are willing to cancel the March 8 plan if PM Modi agrees to meet them.
