A group of Canadian tourists visiting India for the first time were left deeply impressed by the rich cultural heritage of Assam during their visit to the historic Raghunath Bigraha Temple Satra in Srijangram. Their enthusiasm culminated in them joyfully chanting “Joi Aai Axom”, drawing warm appreciation from locals.
The couple, who toured the centuries-old satra on Wednesday, November 19, were particularly moved by the rare green idol of Lord Rama, a distinctive feature that sets the temple apart as an important cultural and spiritual landmark of Lower Assam.
Embracing Assamese traditions, the visitors savoured a local breakfast comprising puri with indigenous potatoes and doi-chira, praising both the flavours and the hospitality extended to them. They also engaged with the cultural practices of the satra, trying their hands at traditional instruments such as the khol and taal, an experience they described as joyful and memorable.
As part of their cultural immersion, the tourists later visited United High School in Srijangram. They interacted with students, observed classroom activities and expressed appreciation for the school’s teaching environment and the enthusiasm of the children.
Local residents and authorities noted that such visits significantly contribute to promoting Assam’s heritage and strengthening international cultural ties.
