Charaideo: Flood-hit families allege favouritism, irregularities in Rs 15,000 relief distribution

Tension gripped Ranga Pothar village under Chaphrai Gaon Panchayat in Assam’s Charaideo district after flood-affected residents alleged irregularities and favouritism in the distribution of the government’s interim flood relief assistance.

Residents of Ward No. 1 and Ward No. 2 alleged that several families whose houses were not damaged in the floods received Rs 15,000 in their bank accounts, while many genuinely affected households were left out of the relief list.

The aggrieved villagers accused local ward members and survey officials of favouring relatives and known persons during the assessment process. They claimed that several flood-hit families, who suffered losses and damage to their homes and belongings, have not received the financial assistance announced by the Assam government.

Expressing strong resentment, the residents demanded a fresh and transparent survey of the affected areas and urged the district administration to investigate the alleged irregularities.

Meanwhile, a flood-affected woman died after reportedly suffering from severe fever in Assam’s Charaideo district on August 4.

The deceased has been identified as Momi Hazarika, a resident of Borahi chariali in Sonari, the district headquarters.

The Assam government has initiated the first phase of direct benefit transfer of Rs 15,000 each to eligible flood-affected families in several worst-hit districts, including Charaideo, to support immediate recovery needs. However, the allegations from Ranga Pothar have raised questions over the accuracy of the ground-level assessment and the selection of beneficiaries.

No immediate response was available from the concerned ward members or survey officials regarding the allegations.
