The re-arrest of journalist Dilwar Hussain Majumdar has sparked widespread protests across Assam, with the Congress party staging a significant demonstration in Margherita on March 28.
The protest, organized by the Tinsukia District Congress in collaboration with the Margherita Block Congress, condemned the government’s action and demanded the journalist’s immediate release.
Majumdar was initially arrested while covering allegations of corruption in an apex bank. Although he was granted bail soon after, his subsequent re-arrest has triggered outrage among political and media circles.
During the demonstration, Congress workers gathered at Margherita Congress Bhawan and marched through the town carrying banners and posters.
Protesters burned an effigy of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on National Highway 315 while chanting slogans against the government.
The Tinsukia and Margherita block Congress leaders labeled the re-arrest an "undemocratic act" and accused the ruling administration of suppressing press freedom.
