Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday, May 5 said the Congress and several opposition parties would continue to pursue all available democratic and legal avenues to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process, while reiterating concerns over the functioning of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and the role of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Addressing reporters in Guwahati, Gogoi said a petition filed by the Congress on issues related to the electoral process remains pending before the Supreme Court. He also referred to a no-confidence motion brought against the Election Commissioner, stating that the initiative was undertaken jointly by Congress and other opposition parties.
Gogoi said several questions raised in the past by Rahul Gandhi regarding fairness, transparency and accuracy in the electoral process had not been answered.
“We all understand how the ECI is working. We will pursue all means possible to protect the integrity of the electoral process,” Gogoi said.
The Assam Congress president further alleged that the BJP leadership does not believe in a neutral and fair electoral process. According to him, the ruling party’s political approach is aimed at weakening opposition parties.
Gogoi claimed that efforts to destabilise the electoral process could have serious implications for the country’s democratic framework and warned that such developments could lead India into a “dangerous process.”
