Cracks in houses, roads trigger panic in Ledo's Jharna Basti; residents seek urgent action

Severe cracks have developed in several houses and roads at Jharna Basti under Margherita circle in Assam's Tinsukia district, triggering panic among residents.

The situation has reportedly been worsening day by day, with nearly 50 families allegedly affected by the cracks.

Residents have alleged that the damage is linked to dumping activities by North Eastern Coalfields (NEC), Coal India Ltd, Margherita. They claimed that despite an inspection of the affected area by NEC-CIL authorities, no concrete measures have been taken so far.

Expressing anger over the alleged inaction, residents of Jharna Basti, led by youth leader Rahul Chetry, submitted a memorandum to the Margherita Co-District administration on Wednesday, seeking immediate intervention and remedial measures.

Chetry warned that if the administration fails to take effective steps to address the issue, the affected residents will launch strong protest programmes with public participation.

The residents have urged the administration and concerned authorities to assess the extent of the damage and take immediate steps to ensure the safety of the affected families.
