Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the recent law and order situation in Dhubri district has been deeply concerning, revealing what he described as an organised attempt to incite communal unrest.
In a detailed post on X, the Chief Minister outlined a series of disturbing events that began around Bakri Eid. “The day after Bakri Eid, some elements kept a severed cow head in front of a Hanuman Mandir. Leaders from both communities met and the peace committee intervened, and it seemed that the situation had been resolved,” Sarma wrote. “However, the very next day, another cow head was placed at the same spot, escalating tensions.”
The incidents were followed by stone-pelting in some areas, deepening the communal fault lines.
Highlighting what he called a "major fact", the Chief Minister revealed that on the day before Eid, posters attributed to a group named “Nabin Bangla” were pasted in parts of Dhubri. “Three posters, including provocative poems and claims to include Dhubri in Bangladesh, were seen. One of the posters was even pasted on Army signals infrastructure,” Sarma said.

He alleged that a communal group has become active in the region with the aim of disturbing peace. “We are fully committed to enforcing law and order and defeating all communal forces,” the Chief Minister asserted.
In response to the situation, Sarma has issued stringent directives. “Shoot-at-sight orders have been issued for nighttime. Anyone who pelts stones or creates disturbances will be dealt with strictly,” he said during his visit to Dhubri to personally review the ground situation.
The government’s response, he added, is aimed at sending a clear message: "Assam will not tolerate attempts to divide society or disturb its harmony."
As tensions simmer, security has been tightened across the district, with police and paramilitary forces deployed in sensitive areas. The administration has also appealed to residents to maintain calm and not fall prey to provocations.
