The brutal rape and murder of a mother by her own son in Dibrugarh's Banipur, Assam, has ignited widespread outrage, with local women’s organizations demanding the harshest possible punishment for the accused. The shocking incident has shaken the entire region, prompting calls for justice that go beyond the traditional legal system.
Protesters, led by women’s groups, have voiced their strong disapproval of any leniency in the case, with many insisting that the accused Shankarjyoti be subjected to an encounter instead of facing a lengthy trial. "Death is the only punishment he deserves. The brutality of his crime is beyond comprehension, and we refuse to allow him back into our society," one protester passionately stated to the media. The community has also announced a collective boycott of the accused, refusing him re-entry into Banipur, even if the judicial process spares him from the death penalty.
The horrifying crime took place inside the family's residence on sub-road No. 11 in Banipur, where Shankarjyoti allegedly raped and then strangled his mother to death. Police from Gabharupathar police station arrived at the scene, arresting the accused and recovering the victim's body. A case (401/2024 u/s 103 (1) BNS) has been registered, and an investigation is underway to gather all details surrounding the crime.
Meanwhile, Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police Rakesh Reddy has said that they received the information about the crime and rushed a police team. The body was then after recovered and sent for post-mortem for examination.
As authorities continue their probe, the community remains deeply shaken, with residents demanding swift and decisive action against Shankarjyoti, whom they see as a danger to society.
