Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on October 9 targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following the BJP’s victory in the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, describing the result as a “crushing defeat” for Gandhi and his politics.
“This is a crushing defeat to Rahul Gandhi. It is a crushing defeat to his politics,” Sarma said, accusing the Congress leader of engaging in politics that, he claimed, would weaken the country and its culture.
“Don’t do drama. Don’t do politics which will weaken our nation. Don’t do politics which will weaken our culture, which will weaken our country,” the chief minister said.
Sarma further alleged that Gandhi had joined hands with people who did not want India to progress.
Claiming that the election result carried a message for the Congress leader, the Assam chief minister said voters had reminded Gandhi that the nation was more important than any individual politician.
“So people of Assam, in our humble way, we have reminded Rahul Gandhi that India is above you. Nation is above you. You are not above the nation,” Sarma said.
“This is the message of this election to Rahul Gandhi,” he added.
The remarks came after the BJP’s Debashish Sharma defeated AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal by 1,40,209 votes in the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, dealing a setback to the Congress, whose candidate Sibamoni Bora finished third.
