All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) president Badruddin Ajmal on March 9 launched a sharp attack on the Indian National Congress, alleging that the party was indirectly helping the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) return to power in Assam.
Speaking to reporters, Ajmal said the primary objective of his party was to remove the BJP from power in the state, but accused the Congress of weakening the opposition space.
“Our goal is to remove the BJP from power, but the Congress is helping them come back to power again,” Ajmal said.
He further claimed that several Congress legislators had already switched sides and joined the BJP, which he said demonstrated the Congress party’s inability to effectively challenge the ruling party.
“Eight Congress MLAs have joined the BJP so far. Congress is the A team of the BJP,” the AIUDF chief alleged.
The remarks come amid intensifying political exchanges in the run-up to the next Assembly elections in the state, with opposition parties continuing to trade accusations over their roles in countering the BJP.
