A herd of nearly 30 wild elephants has moved into human settlements around Singra-Palahpara near Boko, triggering fear among residents and causing damage to crops and property over the past three to four days.
The elephants are believed to have strayed from nearby forested areas and have been moving in groups across villages in the region, including parts of Assam. Farmlands have been trampled and household structures damaged as the herd searches for food.
Villagers, along with forest department teams, have been attempting to steer the animals back towards the forest, but with limited success so far. Officials say monitoring units have been deployed to track the herd’s movement and reduce the risk of further destruction.
Residents report that the elephants continue to roam close to homes, forcing families to stay indoors after dusk. Despite assurances from authorities that mitigation measures are underway, anxiety remains high as the herd shows no immediate signs of retreat from the Singra-Palahpara area.
