Estimated 2–6 quintals of fish found dead in historic pond in Assam's Moran

Large-scale fish deaths have been reported over the past three to four days in a historic community pond attached to a public Namghar at Gajpuriya Nepali (Phukan Nagar) under the Moran Revenue Circle in Assam's Dibrugarh district, prompting residents to seek an investigation into the cause.
 

According to local residents, the pond, which is associated with nearly 65 families in the locality, has witnessed the death of an estimated two to six quintals of fish. The dead fish reportedly weighed between 2 kg and 7 kg each.
 

Residents said the fish had been dying continuously over the past few days, raising concerns about possible contamination of the pond water.
 

The community pond is considered to be of historical significance and has long been associated with the locality's social, cultural and religious activities. Local residents said it was historically known as "Rajar Dinor Pukhuri" (King's Pond) and "Phukan Pukhuri."
 

Residents alleged that despite the incident coming to light several days ago, no official from the Fisheries Department had visited the site to assess the situation.
 

While the exact cause of the fish deaths remains unknown, residents suspect that water contamination, toxic substances or some other unidentified factor may have led to the incident. They said the cause can only be established after scientific examination of the pond water.
 

The residents have urged the district administration and the Fisheries Department to collect water samples from the pond, ascertain the cause of the fish deaths and take appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
 

The incident has drawn attention in the locality, with residents awaiting intervention by the authorities.
