The Assam government has begun preliminary work for the ambitious Kamakhya Corridor project, with the removal of shops and commercial establishments along the main approach road to the revered Kamakhya Temple atop Nilachal Hill.
The eviction drive marks the initial phase of the Rs 498-crore project, which is being developed under the Prime Minister's Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE) to improve infrastructure and enhance the pilgrimage experience at one of India's most significant Shakti Peethas.
Officials said the work commenced only after extensive consultations involving the state government, the Kamakhya Temple management committee, and local residents. Authorities have reiterated that the corridor will be developed without compromising the temple's historical, cultural, and spiritual heritage.
The project aims to improve pedestrian movement, decongest the temple precincts, upgrade civic amenities, and create better facilities for the millions of devotees who visit the shrine annually.
The government has maintained that the corridor's design will preserve the sanctity and architectural character of the Kamakhya temple while modernising the surrounding infrastructure.
The Kamakhya Corridor is one of Assam's flagship religious tourism projects and is expected to significantly boost pilgrimage tourism and local economic activity once completed.
