A young woman was allegedly murdered by her former boyfriend in Assam's Dimoria area, with police arresting the accused within 12 hours of the case coming to light.
The victim, identified as Susmita Mandal, was found dead on June 4. Police said preliminary investigations revealed that she had sustained multiple stab wounds and that her throat had also been slit.
The accused, Bipul Mallik, allegedly fled after the incident but was traced and arrested by Khetri Police during a search operation in Guwahati.
According to police sources, Mallik had previously been arrested in July last year under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act after allegedly impregnating Susmita when she was a minor. He was released from jail in February this year.
Investigators suspect that the accused harboured a grudge against the victim following the earlier case. Police alleged that he had called Susmita to meet him at a secluded field in Dimoria before attacking her with a sharp weapon. During the assault, he allegedly stabbed her 17 to 18 times and slit her throat.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly told investigators that he suspected the victim of being involved in another relationship. Police said his statements and the alleged motive are being examined as part of the investigation.
Family members of the deceased alleged that Susmita had been deceived into meeting the accused before she was killed. They have demanded strict action against him.
Police have taken the accused into custody and said further investigation into the case is underway.
