The trial in the Abhi–Neel Lynching Case, which had sent shockwaves across Assam and the country, has reached its concluding stage, with final arguments now completed. The verdict is likely to be delivered in April.
The case relates to the brutal mob killing of Abhijit Nath and Nilotpal Das on June 8, 2018, at Panjuri village under the Dokmoka police station in Karbi Anglong district.
The two young men, residents of Guwahati, were attacked by a mob on suspicion of being child lifters, a rumour that had been circulating widely on social media at the time.
Despite reportedly pleading for their lives and identifying themselves, they were assaulted in full public view. Videos of the incident later surfaced online, sparking nationwide outrage and renewed concern over mob vigilantism fueled by misinformation.
The incident prompted widespread protests across Assam, with civil society groups, student organisations and citizens demanding swift justice. The case was subsequently fast-tracked, and a chargesheet was filed against 45 accused.
Of the 45 accused, 12 were listed as eyewitnesses. While five admitted to the charges, seven denied the allegations, resulting in prolonged legal proceedings and court-directed cross-examinations. After a lengthy trial process spanning several years, final arguments resumed this week at the Nagaon Sessions Court and have now concluded.
Senior advocate Bijon Mahajan, representing the prosecution, advanced detailed submissions before the court. The hearing was attended by Ajit Nath, father of Abhijit Nath, and Gopal Chandra Das, father of Nilotpal Das, along with members of the Abhi–Neel Memorial Protection Committee.
With the conclusion of arguments, the court is expected to deliver its judgment in April, potentially bringing closure to one of the most disturbing and widely condemned cases of mob lynching in Assam’s recent history.
