Forest department seizes illegal teak worth Rs 50,000 near Assam–Meghalaya Border

The Forest Department of Krisnai under Goalpara district seized illegal teak wood valued at around Rs 50,000 from the Beltaghat area, tightening its grip on the rampant timber smuggling along the Assam–Meghalaya border.

The raid, conducted by the Krisnai Mid Forest Office based on a tip-off from confidential sources, uncovered a stockpile of teak logs allegedly smuggled in from Damash, a border village straddling the Assam–Meghalaya frontier. The confiscated timber was later transported to the Krisnai Forest Office for legal scrutiny and follow-up action.

The operation was led by Forest Officer Debabrata Sharma, who has been at the forefront of relentless raids against illegal timber syndicates. 

Officials said round-the-clock surveillance has been stepped up across border-adjacent areas after a series of successful operations that recently resulted in the seizure of massive timber hauls and the closure of unlicensed sawmills.
