Allegations of mental and physical harassment against the family of a former executive member have triggered strong reactions in Assam's Gossaigaon, at a time when the state government is emphasising women's rights and protection through legal reforms.
Addressing a press conference on May 30, Snigdha Basumatary, Central Secretary of the Women's Wing of United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) and daughter-in-law of former BTC Executive Member Reo Reao Narzihary, alleged that she has been subjected to continuous harassment by her in-laws and other family members since her marriage.
According to Snigdha Basumatary, she has faced various forms of mental distress and pressure from her father-in-law, mother-in-law and other members of the family. She alleged that her in-laws have prevented her from living a normal married life with her husband and are attempting to create a rift between the couple.
She further claimed that efforts were being made to separate her from her husband and alleged that she was subjected to psychological harassment through various means. Basumatary also alleged that she had previously faced physical abuse at the hands of her mother-in-law.
Speaking to the media, she stated that she wishes to continue her marital life with her husband but claimed that her in-laws have been obstructing their relationship.
The allegations have sparked discussion and concern among local residents in Gossaigaon. No official response from Reo Reao Narzihary or his family was immediately available at the time of filing this report.
The matter is expected to draw further attention as authorities and concerned parties examine the allegations raised during the press conference.
