Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) Assam president Abhijit Majumdar has resigned from the party, alleging that it has deviated from its original principles and become increasingly focused on sectarian politics.
Speaking after his resignation, Majumdar said he had been associated with the TMC in Assam for more than two decades and was among the founding members responsible for establishing and expanding the party's presence in the state.
"I was with the TMC in Assam since the very beginning, over twenty years. I was one of the founding members. I helped TMC grow in Assam," Majumdar said.
Explaining his decision to leave the party, he alleged that the organisation had lost its broader political vision and was prioritising vote-bank considerations over inclusive representation.
Majumdar cited the induction of MLA Sherman Ali into the party shortly before elections as an example of what he described as a shift in the party's political approach. He claimed that the TMC was increasingly focused on appealing to a particular voter base rather than representing all sections of society.
The former Assam TMC chief also questioned the party's claim of being a national political organisation, asserting that it remained largely centred around West Bengal and was primarily directed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
"TMC claims to be an 'All India' party, but in reality, it is a Bengal-centric party. Assam has been sidelined," he said.
Majumdar further alleged procedural irregularities within the party and expressed dissatisfaction over what he described as inadequate attention to the interests and concerns of the Hindu Bengali community in Assam.
As a leader from the community, he said he had worked extensively to ensure its representation and protection, but claimed that recent decisions taken by the party were contrary to those objectives.
He also rejected suggestions that he had been expelled from the party, maintaining that he had voluntarily resigned. According to Majumdar, any expulsion process would have required prior notice.
"There is no question of being expelled, as it requires prior notice," he said.
Reiterating his role in building the party's organisational structure in Assam, Majumdar said the TMC had little presence in the state when he joined and that he had helped establish the party's foundation there.
