Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has received a fresh alleged death threat through social media, with Juria police conducting a search at the residence of a man in Garaimari in Nagaon district.
The man, identified as Mubarak Ali, allegedly threatened through a Facebook comment that he would kill the Chief Minister in central Assam if he was paid Rs 2 crore.
Following the alleged threat, Juria police conducted a search at Ali’s residence as part of their investigation.
According to the allegations, Ali had also made a “Pakistan Zindabad” reference in his social media activity.
However, police are yet to establish the authenticity of the account and the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat.
According to local residents, Ali has been living in Kerala for the past two years. They also claimed that he has been married multiple times and described him as a habitual thief. Residents further claimed that he has little formal education.
The latest incident comes after an earlier case in which a tailor from Morigaon district was detained after a Facebook account bearing his name allegedly issued a death threat to Sarma during one of the Chief Minister’s Facebook Live sessions. The tailor, Abdul Mutaleb, had denied making the threat and claimed that a fake Facebook account using his photograph had been created to implicate him.
Police are investigating the latest social media threat and further details are expected to emerge after the probe.
