Fresh flood wave hits Assam's Dhemaji as swollen Jiadhal river breaches course

Fresh flooding struck Assam's Dhemaji district on Saturday, August 1 morning after the Jiadhal River swelled once again, sending a sudden surge of water into several low-lying areas and triggering fresh devastation in parts of the district.

The renewed flooding followed heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh. The rising water level in the Jiadhal River caused floodwaters to flow downstream into the plains, inundating vulnerable settlements within a short span of time.

Among the worst affected was Kamalpur-Dharmapur village, where a channel of the Jiadhal River reportedly breached its course early in the morning. The powerful current swept away the house of elderly resident Anima Hazarika, leaving her family homeless within minutes.

Local residents rushed to the spot and managed to rescue Anima Hazarika and her ailing daughter as floodwaters rapidly engulfed the area. The timely intervention narrowly averted a tragedy.

The emotional toll of the disaster was evident as Anima Hazarika's daughter, already battling illness, broke down in tears while watching their home disappear into the raging floodwaters.

The latest incident underscores the continued vulnerability of Dhemaji to flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall in the upstream regions of Arunachal Pradesh, even as several parts of Assam remain affected by successive waves of flooding during the monsoon season.
