From classroom to cybersecurity: Assam teacher’s AI innovations take on deepfakes, malware and digital fraud

At a time when India is grappling with rising cybercrime, deepfake threats and digital fraud, an award-winning schoolteacher from Assam has emerged as an unlikely yet formidable innovator in artificial intelligence–driven cybersecurity solutions.

Prasenjit Sarma, a teacher from Barpeta district and recipient of the prestigious Global Teacher Award 2025, has developed three advanced AI-based mobile applications designed to strengthen digital safety, counter cyber threats and protect users from online fraud. His work seamlessly bridges education, technology and public interest, placing grassroots innovation from Assam on the national technology map.

Among his innovations, DeepGuard has drawn particular attention for its ability to accurately detect and verify deepfake content. Powered by artificial intelligence, the application distinguishes between authentic and AI-generated images and videos with high precision, addressing a growing concern over misinformation and identity manipulation. The app’s impact was recognised nationally when it won the Tech Avishkar Award at the eRaksha competition.

The second application, VirusGuard, is a comprehensive cybersecurity solution designed to identify digital threats across platforms. The app scans files, internet links, images and applications to detect malicious APKs, viruses and other cyber threats. By integrating intelligence from over 100 globally recognised antivirus engines, VirusGuard offers real-time threat detection, providing immediate protection to smartphones and computers as soon as risks are identified.

Completing the trio is FraudGuard, a real-time fraud detection tool focused on voice-based scams. During live phone calls, the app uses AI to transcribe conversations and instantly analyse them for suspicious patterns commonly associated with phishing, financial fraud and identity theft. Upon detecting potential threats, FraudGuard sends immediate alerts, enabling users to take swift preventive action.

Beyond cybersecurity, Sarma has also developed several AI-powered tools aimed at transforming classroom teaching methods and leveraging technology for agricultural support, underscoring his broader vision of using artificial intelligence for social good.

From a classroom in Barpeta to the frontline of India’s digital safety ecosystem, Prasenjit Sarma’s innovations stand as a testament to how educators can play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s technological future.
