Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on January 9 alleged that senior BJP leaders were involved in discussions about removing the names of voters who do not support the BJP from the electoral rolls, calling it a direct attack on constitutional rights.
Referring to a media report, Gogoi said a news item had appeared in newspapers claiming that during a BJP Zoom meeting—attended by the BJP state president—participants allegedly discussed removing the names of people who do not vote for the BJP from the voter list.
“Who are they to remove people from the voter list? The right to vote is a constitutional right,” Gogoi said, expressing serious concern over what he described as an attempt to undermine democracy.

He also criticised the silence of the Election Commission of India on the issue, stating that such allegations warranted immediate clarification and action from the constitutional authority.
“The Central Election Commission is silent on this matter. This is extremely serious,” Gogoi said, adding that the Congress would take legal steps. “We are registering an FIR on this,” he asserted.
The Congress leader said any attempt to intimidate voters or manipulate electoral rolls would be strongly opposed, warning that such actions threaten the democratic foundations of the country.
