Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a scathing attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi during an election rally held at North Salmara in Bongaigaon district on Friday, May 2.
Addressing the gathering in support of the NDA alliance candidate, Sarma made a series of sensational claims in front of the media.
Referring to a recent foreign visit by Gaurav Gogoi, Sarma alleged:
“Gaurav Gogoi recently spent 15 days in Pakistan — a country that has no tourism appeal. What was he doing there for 15 days? He owes an answer to the people of Assam.”
In a more controversial remark, the Chief Minister said: “Gaurav Gogoi’s two children are citizens of a foreign country. If he can prove that his children are Indian nationals, I will resign from the post of Chief Minister.”

He further added: “In a household of four, three members are citizens of foreign nations. It’s unclear when he might leave India. He has been living here like a tourist.”
Sarma questioned why former Gogoi’s family was allegedly drawing income from Pakistan while residing in India: “Why is his family taking salaries from Pakistan and living in India?”
He concluded with another pointed allegation: “I suspect Gaurav Gogoi has visited Pakistan two to three times. I only know of one such trip. We can’t confirm the others because he left his passport behind in Israel.”
The remarks have stirred a fresh controversy in Assam’s political landscape ahead of the final phase of the Lok Sabha polls. Congress has not yet issued an official response to the Chief Minister’s statements.
