Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi on October 9 called for Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi’s resignation, describing the party’s performance in the Nagaon by-election as a historic defeat as BJP candidate Devasish Sharma established a commanding lead.
According to the latest figures, Sharma was leading by 1,83,680 votes, with 6,39,487 votes, while Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora was trailing with 1,12033 votes. AIUDF candidate Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal was in second place with 4,55,807 votes.
Reacting to the trends, Akhil Gogoi said Congress had suffered a sharp decline in support despite Nagaon being a constituency where the party had previously secured a substantial victory.
He pointed out that the by-election was necessitated after the sitting Congress representative switched to the BJP, but said the electoral contest had since taken an unexpected turn.
“Last time, Congress won by a margin of 2.5 lakh votes. This time, even securing 2.5 lakh votes will be a struggle,” he said, adding that the party was struggling to reach the two-lakh mark.
Akhil Gogoi also attributed Congress’s poor performance to an alleged decline in minority support, claiming that the party’s share of minority votes had fallen sharply.
“The most significant development this time is that the minority vote share for Congress has plummeted from 25% to just 5%,” he said, predicting that the BJP would win the minority-dominated constituency.
Calling the result a major setback for the Congress, the Raijor Dal legislator held the state party leadership responsible for the party’s electoral position.
“This is a historic defeat for the Congress,” he said.
Targeting Gaurav Gogoi, Akhil Gogoi said the Congress president had failed to lead the party effectively and should step down without delay.
“I believe the Congress president, Gaurav Gogoi, has failed completely. In my opinion, Gaurav Gogoi should resign from the post of State Congress president this very day,” he said.
The latest trends place the BJP firmly ahead in the Nagaon by-election, with Congress trailing well behind the leading candidates. The result marks a significant electoral challenge for the state Congress leadership.
