A woman was allegedly killed by her husband during an altercation at their residence in the Basisthapur area of Guwahati, with police saying the dispute was linked to his allegation that she was involved in an extramarital relationship.
DCP (East) Tabu Ram Pegu said police received information around 9.45 pm that the married couple, residing at By-lane No. 4, House No. 14 in Basisthapur, were not responding to calls from their families.
A team from Hatigaon Police Station immediately reached the house and found the woman, identified as Riya Talukder Goswami, dead with her head severed from her body, Pegu said.
Experts from the CID and Forensic Science Laboratory were subsequently called to the crime scene. Several exhibits were examined and seized as part of the investigation.
The woman's husband, Ramanuj Goswami, surrendered before the police and allegedly told investigators that the couple frequently quarrelled over various issues, including his suspicion that his wife was involved in an extramarital relationship.
According to Pegu, during one such altercation, the husband allegedly lost his temper and killed his wife. Police said the weapon used was a sharp dao.
Asked about the motive, the DCP said the alleged extramarital relationship was the primary issue behind the repeated disputes between the couple.
Police are also examining whether the accused was under the influence of drugs or had any history of drug addiction. Pegu said investigators were verifying all facts and circumstances and declined to share further details at this stage.
When asked about reports that the accused allegedly tried to feed the woman's body parts to a dog, the DCP said he was not aware of the claim and that the matter would be clarified as the investigation progresses.
A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
