Guwahati police rescue 23-year-old woman from guest house room, man detained

A 23-year-old woman from Jorhat was reportedly found in an unconscious condition inside a room at a guest house in Guwahati's Jhalukbari area late Sunday night, September 28, with police detaining a man in connection with the incident.

According to preliminary reports, Jalukbari police recovered the woman from a room at Sunflower Homestay/Guest House, where she was allegedly staying with a man identified as Shan Miya of Sipajhar.

The woman was reportedly found in a critical condition, and police subsequently took her into custody for necessary assistance and investigation. The circumstances leading to her condition are not yet clear.

The guest house manager has also been taken into police custody for questioning. The man who allegedly brought the woman to the guest house was also detained.

The incident has drawn attention amid the ongoing investigation into the death of Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria at another homestay in Guwahati. However, there is currently no confirmation that the Jalukbari incident is connected to the Nimisha case, and police are yet to establish what happened inside the guest house.

Questions have also been raised over verification and documentation procedures at guest houses and homestays operating in the city.

Meanwhile, reports said the owner of Sunflower Guest House, identified as Arfat Shah, allegedly misbehaved with journalists who went to the premises to report on the incident.

Police are questioning the detained individuals and investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman's condition. Further details are awaited.
