Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing him of undermining democracy and making a "farce" of the Constitution.
Gogoi said Kumar should step down over what he described as actions that had "mocked democracy".
"As the MLA of the Sivasagar constituency and president of Raijor Dal, I demand that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resign immediately," Gogoi said.
He appealed to Gen Z, students and the youth across the country to intensify protests demanding Kumar's resignation.
Gogoi also warned Prime Minister Narendra Modi that if Kumar did not resign, people could eventually demand the Prime Minister's resignation.
"If Gyanesh Kumar does not resign, then one time the people will announce that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should resign," he said.
Calling for a wider mobilisation, Gogoi urged artists, intellectuals, youth and people across the country to unite and campaign against the Chief Election Commissioner.
He alleged that Kumar had "destroyed our democracy" and made the Constitution "a farce".
Gogoi's remarks come amid an escalating opposition campaign against the Election Commission over allegations of manipulation of electoral rolls. The Election Commission has rejected allegations of wrongdoing, while opposition parties have continued to demand greater transparency and accountability.
Gogoi is currently on an indefinite agitation at the Assam Assembly campus over pending flood relief for affected families in Upper Assam.
