Heavy rain triggers landslide in Assam's Mahur, houses and school damaged, locals blame NH-27 construction

Heavy rainfall over the past few days triggered a landslide in Mahur under Mahur Police Station in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, damaging four houses and Soron Presbyterian High School, according to local residents.

The landslide has left several families concerned about the possibility of further damage as the affected area remains vulnerable to additional slope failures. The families whose houses were damaged have started moving their household belongings to safer locations.

While heavy rainfall is being cited as the immediate trigger for the landslide, local residents have alleged that ongoing construction work on National Highway-27, formerly NH-54, has aggravated the situation. They claimed that highway construction activities have contributed to soil instability and increased the risk of landslides in the area.

The affected residents have appealed to the Dima Hasao district administration to conduct an immediate assessment of the damage and take measures to ensure the safety of the affected families. They have also sought arrangements for rehabilitation and other necessary assistance.

The villagers have urged officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to assess the impact of the highway construction and provide appropriate compensation for houses and other properties damaged in the incident.

Residents have warned that they may launch an agitation if their compensation demands are not addressed. They have called for immediate intervention by the district administration and highway authorities to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of people living in the affected area.
