Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, April 2 responded to remarks questioning public displays of affection by women supporters, stating that such gestures stem from respect and appreciation for his work in public service.
Addressing a public gathering, the Chief Minister said that expressions such as hugging or kissing were acts of goodwill and affection shown by people, particularly women, who acknowledge his government’s efforts in welfare and development.
Referring to criticism from opposition leaders, Sarma said questions had been raised about such interactions, but maintained that these were being misinterpreted. He stated that elderly women, mothers and sisters often express their affection in culturally familiar ways, and that such gestures should be viewed in the context of public trust rather than controversy.
Sarma further said that his administration focuses on governance and welfare delivery rather than symbolic or identity-based politics. “If we work for the welfare of the people, they will naturally bless us and show their affection,” he said.
Citing his outreach initiatives, including the ‘Ashirvaad Yatra’, the Chief Minister noted that he had travelled extensively across the state, where people expressed their support in different ways. While some conveyed their appreciation verbally, others, particularly women, expressed their affection through physical gestures.
The remarks come amid political exchanges between the ruling party and the opposition, with leaders debating the nature of public engagement and political conduct in the state.
