Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed strong displeasure after reports emerged of individuals pouring alcohol as a tribute at the cremation site of late music icon Zubeen Garg in Sonapur.
Speaking to the press, Sarma called the acts deeply disrespectful and contrary to Zubeen’s artistic legacy. “It feels sad that people are pouring alcohol as a tribute at the cremation site. Offerings should be flowers, not tobacco or alcohol. If this becomes a ritual over time, people may start comparing him with other legends like Bishnu Rabha, Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, or Bhupen Hazarika. Even Bhupen Hazarika drank alcohol, but that never became his identity — his music and broad mind defined him,” the Chief Minister stated.
He added, “We won’t let anyone distort Zubeen’s image. I will not let his name be associated with alcohol. Instead, his art should be cherished — songs like Mayabini and Hur Hur Hurai De should define who he was.”

Over the past month, several disappointing incidents have been reported at the cremation site, including the misuse of alcohol by self-proclaimed fans. Sarma emphasised that such acts would not be tolerated and the site must remain a place of respect and remembrance.
“Zubeen Garg belongs to the people of Assam — his music, his creativity, his passion. Let us honour him through his art, not through actions that demean his memory,” the Chief Minister added.
