Himanta says no FIR planned against Syeda Hameed, emphasizes lawful action on return

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the state government has no plans to file an FIR against activist and former Planning Commission member Syeda Saiyidain Hameed, who recently sparked controversy by suggesting that Bangladeshis have a right to reside in Assam.

On former Planning Commission member Syeda Hameed, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma says, "...if she wants to come back to Assam again, she will be handled with due respect, but in accordance with the law and with respect of our kind."

"I think we should not file any  FIR because I think if I file an FIR, she will collect contributions from different parts of the country to file the cases and all these things. She will be only enriched. So if she comes back to Assam, we'll do whatever is required to be done. So as of now, I am not thinking of any FIR. If some people give FIR, it's a different thing. But if she wants to come back to Assam again, she will be handled with due respect, but in accordance with the law and with respect of our kind."

Sarma assured that if Hameed returns to Assam, she will be treated with due respect but handled strictly according to the law. He highlighted ongoing actions against illegal immigrants, noting that in the past week alone, 26 Bangladeshi nationals were pushed back.

The CM emphasised Assam’s historical vigilance against illegal immigration, stating that the state has consistently acted to prevent misuse of its borders. Hameed’s comments, calling for humane treatment of Bangladeshis, came amid these ongoing enforcement measures, sparking the recent debate.
