Honouring the man who transformed libraries: National Library Day observed in Assam's Dhubri

National Library Day was observed at the Dhubri District Library on Wednesday, August 12, paying tribute to Dr S R Ranganathan, widely regarded as the “Father of Library Science in India”.
 

The programme highlighted Ranganathan's pioneering contribution to the development and modernisation of library systems in India and his enduring vision of making knowledge accessible to all.
 

Born on August 9, 1892, in Shiyali, now Sirkazhi in Tamil Nadu, Ranganathan revolutionised library and information management in India. He authored the renowned “Five Laws of Library Science”, which continue to guide library practices.
 

National Library Day is observed annually on August 12 in India to commemorate his contribution to the field.
 

During the programme, library authorities underlined the importance of libraries in nurturing reading habits, encouraging research and promoting lifelong learning.
 

Local intellectuals, students and library staff attended the event and paid tribute to Ranganathan's legacy, while stressing the continued relevance of libraries in making knowledge and information accessible to people across society.
