Hundreds of people participated in a massive candlelight rally organised by the All Assam Adivasi Students’ Association (AASA) at Dholmara in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on May 29, demanding justice and a high-level investigation into the mysterious deaths of two schoolgirls.
Students, local residents and members of various organisations joined the rally carrying candles and raising slogans seeking a fair and impartial probe into the deaths of Anamika Bara and Sarita Lakra.
Emotional scenes were witnessed during the protest as participants expressed grief and anger over the deaths of the two minor girls.
The bodies of the two students were recovered from a pond at Dholmara on May 21 under mysterious circumstances.
Since the recovery of the bodies, family members and local residents have questioned claims that the deaths were caused by drowning and alleged that there could be deeper circumstances behind the incident.
The protesters demanded a transparent investigation to uncover the truth and ensure justice for the bereaved families. They also urged authorities to take strict action if any foul play is established during the probe.
Meanwhile, the Assam government has already announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased students.
Speaking to the media during the rally, AASA president Gudwin Hembrom said the organisation would continue its democratic agitation until justice is delivered to the families.
