All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) president Utpal Sarma on Independence Day, August 15, said the Assamese community’s survival depended on the full implementation of every provision of the Assam Accord.
Addressing an AASU candle-lighting programme in Morigaon, Sarma said the organisation would not allow the sacrifices of those who lost their lives during the Assam Movement to go in vain.
“If the Assamese community is to survive, every provision of the Assam Accord has to be implemented. Our struggle will continue until the Accord is implemented in letter and spirit,” he said.
Sarma said the people of Assam would continue to fight for their rights and would not accept a situation where they were forced to “bow their heads and kneel before Bangladeshis” in their own homeland.
“As long as we live, we will continue to struggle and live with our heads held high,” he said.
The AASU president also warned the Assam government of fresh agitation if it failed to implement the provisions of the Assam Accord.
The candle-lighting programme was organised in Morigaon on Independence Day to remember those who sacrificed their lives during the Assam Movement.
