Allegations of illegal excavation and sale of soil from the banks of the Kolong River have triggered concern among residents in parts of Nagaon district, even as several riverside villages continue to face the threat of severe erosion.
According to local residents, a section of alleged land mafias has been excavating large stretches of land along the Kolong riverbank using JCB machines in areas such as Kashari Gaon and Auniati near Puranigudam. The excavated soil is reportedly being sold, prompting strong reactions from the local community.
The allegations come at a time when riverbank erosion along the Kolong has already affected villages including Karhali Gaon, Kolongpar Halowa Gaon and Kashari Gaon. Residents fear that the ongoing excavation could further weaken the riverbank and increase the risk of erosion.
Locals have also accused the Nagaon Forest Department and the district administration of failing to take action against the alleged illegal activity.
Only a few days ago, erosion caused significant damage to a Shiva temple in the historic Kadhali village. Residents said the continued excavation of land adjacent to the river has heightened concerns about the safety of nearby settlements and infrastructure.
They have urged the authorities to intervene immediately and stop the alleged illegal digging, warning that the activity could push the erosion-prone areas into a more dangerous situation.
