Acting on a series of public complaints over the illegal sale of interstate lottery tickets, police in Dhubri conducted a raid on May 9 and uncovered an unauthorised lottery operation functioning from a shop in the town area.
According to police sources, the raid was carried out after authorities received credible information from local residents regarding illegal gambling activities being run from the establishment. During the operation, officers seized a large quantity of lottery tickets along with unaccounted cash allegedly being used for illegal bookings.
The proprietor of the shop, identified by police sources as the owner of KC Das, was allegedly operating an unauthorised distribution point for lottery tickets originating from other states. Officials stated that the sale of such lotteries is prohibited in Assam unless explicitly authorised by the state government under the provisions of the Lotteries (Regulation) Act, 1998.
Police said lotteries linked to states such as Nagaland and Sikkim have remained under scrutiny as they often bypass state tax regulations and target local residents through illegal channels.
“The sale of these tickets is illegal under current laws, and we have seized all materials accordingly,” a police source said.
Authorities have urged residents to immediately report any illegal gambling or unauthorised lottery activities to the nearest police station.
Police detained Dilip Kumar Das and his son, Debopriya Das of KC Das. "The sale of these tickets is illegal under current laws, and we have seized all materials accordingly," a police source confirmed. Residents have been urged to report any further illegal gambling or lottery sales to the local police station immediately.
