“I'm 100 kg, Himanta 80 kg; if I climb on him, his backbone would break anyway”: Badruddin Ajmal

All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal launched a sharp attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and BJP's Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll candidate Debashish Sharma while addressing an election campaign meeting at Shantijan Bazar in the Dhing Assembly constituency.

Referring to Sarma's reported remarks about breaking the "backbone" of the Miya community, Ajmal said, “Himanta weighs 80 kg while I weigh 100 kg. If I climb on him, his backbone would break anyway. Yet he talks about breaking the backbones of Miya people.”

Ajmal also alleged that Sarma had referred to members of the Miya community as Bangladeshis and had called him a Pakistani.

Targeting BJP candidate Debashish Sharma, Ajmal said, “If Debashish Sharma becomes an MP, he will play songs in Parliament. I will slap him once and throw him out.”

Ajmal is contesting the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, where the BJP has fielded former Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Debashish Sharma and the Congress has nominated former Batadraba MLA Sibamoni Bora. All three candidates filed their nomination papers on September 16.

The remarks came amid an intensified campaign for the October 6 bypoll. The Nagaon seat fell vacant after former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the Lok Sabha after winning the Dispur Assembly seat in the 2026 Assam elections.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Rupak Sarma campaigned alongside Debashish Sharma across the Nagaon-Batadraba Assembly segment. The duo participated in nine election meetings as part of the BJP's campaign.

Addressing the meetings, BJP leaders alleged that Congress had failed to deliver on development commitments to the minority community. They claimed that voters from the community were now moving towards the BJP in the interest of development.

“Congress has only deceived the minority community in the name of development,” party leaders said, adding that the community was “ready to respond to Congress's deception”.

The BJP also claimed that several hundred Congress workers joined the party during the campaign meetings.

The BJP has intensified its campaign across Nagaon ahead of the bypoll, with senior leaders and alliance partners holding meetings across the constituency.
