Amidst severe flooding triggered by incessant rainfall under the influence of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, the Torsa River overflowed its banks, inundating vast stretches across Bhutan and West Bengal.
In response to an emergency evacuation request from Bhutanese authorities, the Indian Army launched a swift and high-risk rescue operation on October 5, deploying two helicopters from the Sevoke Road Aviation Base to Phuentsholing, one of the worst-affected areas.
Despite marginal weather conditions and poor visibility, Army Aviation pilots successfully carried out aerial reconnaissance before making precise landings in difficult terrain to rescue stranded civilians and transport them to safety.
A senior military official lauded the operation, stating, “The Indian Army remains ever ready to assist civil authorities in times of crisis. This mission reflects our unwavering commitment to humanitarian values and the enduring friendship between India and Bhutan.”
